Vehicles used in driver examinations must be roadworthy. If the vehicle has significant deficiencies, the driving test cannot be taken.

Obtaining a vehicle for a driving test

You can rent a vehicle for the driving test from a driving school, for example. The examiner Ajovarma has no vehicles for taking driving tests.

If you have received driving instruction under a driving instruction permit, you can take the driving test with the vehicle you used in the instruction. Before arriving at the driving test, make sure that the vehicle is in order and meets the requirements for driving examination vehicles.

In addition, make sure that the instruction equipment is securely and correctly in place.

Your driving examination vehicle may have special controls that make driving easier if you have been diagnosed with an illness or disability that requires the use of special controls.

Your right to drive may be restricted to vehicles that have the necessary controls. The restrictions are recorded in the driving licence as special conditions.

Mopeds, microcars and quad bikes

Category AM/120, i.e., moped

  • The moped must be two-wheeled.

The handling test can also be taken on a three-wheel moped if the candidate's illness, injury or disability so requires. The illness or disability is confirmed by a medical report.

Category AM/121, i.e., microcar, quad bike or category T3 quad tractor

  • The maximum design speed of the microcar or quad bike is no more than 45 km/h.
  • The maximum design speed of the category T3 quad tractor is more than 40 km/h but no more than 60 km/h.
  • If the seats are side by side, the vehicle must have a driver training brake. If the passenger seat is behind the driver's seat, the vehicle must have a driver training brake if the examiner is in the vehicle. The brake pedal must be able to control all wheels of the vehicle.

Motorcycles

Category A1 two-wheel motorcycle without a sidecar

  • The power does not exceed 11 kW, and the power-to-weight ratio does not exceed 0.1 kW/kg.
  • The design speed is at least 90 km/h.
  • The cylinder capacity of the internal combustion engine is at least 115 cm3 or the power-to-weight ratio of the electric motorcycle is at least 0.08 kW/kg.

 Category A2 two-wheel motorcycle without a sidecar

  • The power is at least 20 kW but does not exceed 35 kW. Driving instruction can also be given on a motorcycle with a power of 11–19 kW.
  • The power-to-weight ratio does not exceed 0.2 kW/kg, and the motorcycle must not have been converted from a vehicle with more than twice its power.
  • The cylinder capacity of the internal combustion engine is at least 245 cm3 or the power-to-weight ratio of the electric motorcycle is at least 0.15 kW/kg.

Category A two-wheel motorcycle without a sidecar

  • Th unladen mass is more than 175 kg.
  • The power is at least 50 kW.
  • The cylinder capacity of the internal combustion engine is at least 595 cm3 or the power-to-weight ratio of the electric motorcycle is at least 0.25 kW/kg.

The driving test can also be taken with a three-wheel motorcycle if the student's illness, injury or disability so requires. The illness or disability is confirmed by a medical report.

Passenger cars

Category B passenger car, van or motor caravan

  • The total mass does not exceed 3,500 kg.
  • The maximum design speed is at least 100 km/h.
  • The vehicle is equipped with a driver training brake.

Category B/96 combination of a passenger car, van or motor caravan and a trailer

  • The combined total mass of the tractor vehicle and the trailer exceeds 3,500 kg but does not exceed 4,250 kg.
  • The total mass of the trailer exceeds 750 kg.
  • The vehicle is equipped with a driver training brake.

Category BE combination of a passenger car, van or motor caravan and a trailer

  • The combined registered total mass exceeds 3,500 kg.
  • The maximum design speed is at least 100 km/h.
  • The trailer's total mass is at least 1,000 kg and the real total mass at least 800 kg.
  • The trailer cargo compartment or load forms a closed box body which is at least as wide and as high as the cab.

Lorries

Category C1 lorry

  • The registered total mass exceeds 4,000 kg but does not exceed 7,500 kg.
  • The length is at least 5 metres.
  • The maximum design speed is at least 80 km/h.
  • The vehicle is equipped with anti-lock brakes.
  • The vehicle is equipped with a tachograph.
  • The cargo compartment or load forms a closed box body which is at least as wide and as high as the cab.
  • The vehicle is equipped with a driver training brake.

If you can only drive vehicles with special controls due to an impairment, illness, injury or disability, the requirement for a total mass of 4,000 kg and a tachograph does not apply.

Prove this with a medical report and a driving test, if applicable. The right to drive must be restricted to non-commercial transport with the C1 vehicle or category C1E combination in question.

Category C1E combination

  • The lorry's total mass does not exceed 7,500 kg. The trailer's total mass exceeds 1,250 kg and the real total mass exceeds 800 kg.
  • The length of the combination is at least 8 metres.
  • The maximum design speed of the vehicle is at least 80 km/h.
  • The trailer cargo compartment or load forms a closed box body which is at least as wide and as high as the cab. It may be narrower if the driver's view to the rear is only made possible by using external rear-view mirrors.
  • No separate brake pedal is required on the tractor vehicle.

Category C lorry

  • The registered total mass of the vehicle is at least 12,000 kg. In the driving examination, the real total mass must be at least 10,000 kg. For example, the total mass may consist of a 7,000 kg vehicle + 3,000 kg load = 10,000 kg total mass.
  • The length is at least 8 metres.
  • The width is at least 2.40 meters.
  • The maximum design speed of the vehicle is at least 80 km/h.
  • The vehicle is equipped with anti-lock brakes.
  • The vehicle has a transmission system that allows manual selection of gears.
  • The vehicle is equipped with a tachograph.
