As the owner of a vehicle, you can create a digital certificate for the vehicle in My e-Services. Give the certificate to the buyer of the vehicle to enable them to register a change of ownership.

A digital certificate is a code with six (6) characters that can be used to change the owner or holder information of a vehicle in My e-Services. Give the certificate to the buyer when you agree on the sale. The digital certificate is valid for 14 days.

When can you create a digital certificate?

A digital certificate must be created electronically in My e-Services. You can create a certificate if you are the owner of the vehicle and you are at least 15 years old.

Create a digital certificate in My e-Services

  • Log in to My e-Services.

    After identification, select your service role: personal services, acting on behalf of another person or acting on behalf of a company/an organisation.
     
  • Create a digital certificate for a vehicle in the Vehicles and taxation section.

    In the list, select the vehicle for which you want to create a digital certificate. Then select Seller: Create a digital certificate for a vehicle. 
     
  • Approve the creating a digital certificate and go to the Confirmation page to receive confirmation of the activity.

You will receive a digital certificate code with six (6) characters. Give it to the buyer when selling the vehicle. If you wish, you can print out a PDF file with the certificate and instructions on how to use it and give it to the buyer.

Print out a copy of the pre-filled deed of transfer for yourself and the buyer to carry out the sale

When you are creating a digital certificate, you can print out a pre-filled deed of transfer for the vehicle from the service. Print out a copy of the deed for you and the buyer. Complete the deeds of transfer when carrying out the sale and sign both of them. Check that both copies contain identical information. Keep the deeds of transfer in case any conflicts arise.

Additional conditions and restrictions on creating a digital certificate 

The registration service cannot be used in the following situations:

  • Registration number missing: The vehicle does not have a valid registration number.
  • The right to change registration details has been restricted: The vehicle is subject to a registration alteration prohibition issued by an authority, or it contains registration pendency data.
  • The vehicle has been deregistered or finally deregistered, decommissioned for registration in the military vehicle register or decommissioned for registration abroad or on the Åland Islands.
  • The vehicle has been stolen: The police have marked the vehicle as stolen.
  • The vehicle has been mortgage inspected: The vehicle cannot be registered for road use, but the owner wants to mortgage the vehicle. Therefore, the vehicle has been registration inspected, i.e. mortgage inspected. 
  • A notification of transfer from holder’s control has been submitted on the vehicle.
