You can get a driving licence for a moped or a light quadricycle once you have turned 15. A moped licence (AM/120) is compulsory for any driver born in or after 1985. To drive a light quadricycle (AM/121), you need a driving licence for a light quadricycle or for a passenger car, for example.

Do the following

1

Apply for a driving licence permit

You need a driving licence permit to take the driving examination tests. You can apply for a driving licence permit after you have turned 14.

If the driving licence for a moped or light quadricycle is your first driving licence, apply for a driving licence permit for the first driving licence.

If you already have a driving licence in any category, apply for a driving licence permit to upgrade your driving licence.

2

Participate in theory and driving instruction

Complete the Training for candidates for first driving licences (EAS). 4 theory lessons. The training provides you with

  • basic information about the road traffic system;
  • vehicle interaction and risks;
  • factors affecting road safety;
  • responsibilities and obligations associated with driving motor vehicles; and
  • other requirements for driving safely and with good situational awareness.

If you have previously completed the training for another driving licence, you do not need to take it again.

The training may be provided by a driving school or arranged by another officially approved instructor, such as a school. The training cannot be provided under a driving instruction permit.

A driving licence for a moped or light quadricycle does not include compulsory driving instruction. However, this is recommended. You can receive instruction at a driving school or under a driving instruction permit. You can start practising driving when you have turned 15.

3

Take the theory test

You can take the theory test one month before turning 15.

When you take the theory test, you will need

  • a photo ID, such as a passport or ID card
  • Guardians' Consent form if you are under 18
  • a certificate that you have completed the Training for candidates for first driving licences (EAS) if you are applying for a driving licence for the first time. You can obtain the certificate from a driving school or another training provider.

In addition, you need a valid driving licence permit. The organiser of the theory test, Ajovarma, will check the validity of the permit in the Traficom system. Ajovarma is a company providing services for Traficom.

4

Take a handling test or a driving test

The moped driving examination includes a handling test and the light quadricycle driving examination includes a driving test. You can take a handling test or a driving test when you have turned 15.

When taking the handling test or a driving test you will need

  • a photo ID, such as a passport or ID card
  • certificate of instruction and examination (E100). You will get the certificate from your driving school or the person who has given you instruction under a driving instructor permit.
    • If you have not received instruction, you can print out the form at the bottom of this page. The examiner records the results of the test on the form. After you have passed the test, you can use the certificate as proof of your right to drive.
  • appropriate protective equipment and clothing when taking the moped handling test or the quad bike driving test if the quad bike is not equipped with a fixed body structure.

In protective equipment and clothing, pay attention to the following:

  • use a crash helmet approved for road use. If your helmet does not have a visor, you will also need goggles.
  • wear protective clothing, such as a long-sleeved jacket and long trousers made of an intact abrasion-resistant material.
  • for example, sweatshirts/sweatpants, tracksuits, shell suits or leggings are not suitable clothes if they are not separately approved for road traffic use.
  • we also recommend the use of protective gloves.

In addition, you need a valid driving licence permit. The examiner will check the information in the system.

5

After you have passed the handling or driving test, you will receive your driving licence by post

You can drive a moped or light quadricycle immediately after having passed the handling or driving test.

When driving, carry the certificate on the passed driving examination you received from the examiner and a photo ID with you.

You can use the driving examination to drive until you receive your driving licence.

The official driving licence will be sent to your home address within about two weeks of the examination. The driving licence is valid for 15 years, after which it must be renewed.
