Driving licences are valid for a fixed period of time and must be renewed regularly. Use this service when you want to continue the validity of the driving licence before the end of its period of validity.

You may renew your driving licence no more than 6 months before its expiry. The new driving licence is valid for 2, 5 or 15 years, depending on your age and your driving licence categories.

Read about the requirements concerning fitness to drive and check in advance whether you need a medical report when you renew your licence.

Do not use this service if, in addition to renewing your licence, you would also like to upgrade your driving licence to cover new categories or downgrade your driving licence, i.e. you would like to remove all Group 2 driving licence categories. In that case, visit a service point of Ajovarma.

When can you renew your driving licence electronically?

You can use the Renew your driving licence service if

  • your driving licence will expire within the next six months, or
    • your Group 1 (passenger car, motorcycle) driving licence expired less than two years ago, or
    • your Group 2 (lorries, buses and coaches) driving licence expired less than one year ago.
  • you have not been granted a driving licence in another EU or EEA country. By using the service, you give permission to verify the information in other EU and EEA countries.
  • your permanent address is in mainland Finland. Your driving licence will be sent to your address in Finland as stated in the population information system.
  • you are not subject to a driving ban.
  • you have previously submitted a facial photograph and your signature to the authority, for example for a passport.
  • you can log into the service using online banking codes or a mobile certificate.
  • you do not have special condition 95 indicating professional competence on your driving licence.
  • you are not under the obligation to use an alcohol interlock when driving.

Renew your driving licence in Traficom's My e-Services. You can find the application form in the service under the heading Driving licence.

In certain cases, a medical report is required for renewing a driving licence. See Requirements related to fitness to drive further down on this page for when a medical report is mandatory.

If you have seen a doctor and the doctor has recorded a medical report on fitness to drive (F122) in the Kanta Services, you can retrieve the information on your fitness to drive in the service.
