Traficom maintains the Vehicular and Driver Data Register and sends letters to driving licence holders if they commit traffic offences. Repeated offences lead to a driving ban imposed by the police.
As a driving licence holder, the police may impose a driving ban on you for a single serious traffic offence, such as causing a traffic hazard or operating a vehicle without a licence.
In the case of minor traffic offences, the police will consider imposing a driving ban if
- you have held a driving licence for a motorcycle or a passenger car for more than 2 years and commit at least three traffic offences within one year or at least four traffic offences within two years.
- you have held a driving licence for a motorcycle or a passenger car for less than 2 years and commit at least two traffic offences within one year or at least three traffic offences within two years.
The time is calculated from your most recent traffic offence.
You will receive a letter from Traficom if you have committed one or more traffic offences. The letter is sent when the next offence may result in a driving ban. The decision on the driving ban is made by the police.
Traffic offences remain in the register for 5 years
As a rule, traffic offences remain in the Transport Register for 5 years after the decision on the offence has become final. Such traffic offences include driving while intoxicated, causing a serious traffic hazard and operating a vehicle without a licence.
